Blueprint for the Future

By | Events | No Comments

Over the past few years I’ve developed a great relationship with the Toronto Kiwanis Boys & Girls Clubs, who have invited me back numerous times to photograph their annual fundraiser and annual general meeting. I love documenting people who are passionate about their work and helping others. Corporate shoots can often look stale and boring, but I approach them the same way I approach a wedding, portrait session, or even street photography; I look for emotion, interesting faces, good light and visually compelling lines. A couple of things worth pointing out: 1) the guest speaker, Justice Donald McLeod is the first black judge to graduate from Queen’s University, and 2) the gentleman who busted out of his paisley patterned shirt to become Superman helped exceed their fundraising goal by a long-shot.

Blueprint For The Future

For a photographer, smiling faces at a beautiful venue makes for great inspiration. The folks at the Toronto Kiwanis Boys & Girls Clubs do a terrific job every year at their annual fundraiser, and for the past two years have made great use of the incredible space at the Berkeley Church. I’ve shot this charity event the past three years, and each year it keeps getting better. This year’s event was hosted by Arisa Cox of Big Brother Canada, and featured a ping pong table, popcorn making machine, Barefoot Wine, beer by Sweetgrass Brewing, a host of awesome silent auction items in a room full of wonderful people, all accentuated by the magical Berkeley Church and its glorious architectural features. I especially love the light that pours through those arched windows … it’s like “butter on pancakes” the way it melts into pools of illumination. Check out the full photo set here.

Bella’s Bat Mitzvah

The last time I photographed the Remer family, there was a table with stacks of Oreos, a bubble machine, a room full of balloons and a whole lot of smiling, laughing and dancing. This time around, at Bella’s Bat Mitzvah, the smiling, laughing and dancing remained, but the Oreos, bubbles and balloons were replaced with paint, POP art, fish tacos and a mesmerizing speed painting performance by Jessica Gorlicky — aka JESSGO — who painted a portrait of Bella towards the end of the party. Bella and her friends also got to express themselves creatively, each of them painting their own canvas with a unique sketch by JESSGO. This family is full of colourful ideas that make for great moments to photograph. If my payment was solely in the form of fish tacos, I would’ve been totally cool with that… AND, the taffy was out of this world. Read More

Single Frame // Beaches Jazz Festival

By | Blog Posts, Events | No Comments

Toronto Event PhotographyKC Roberts & The Live Revolution at the Toronto Beaches Jazz Festival. Snapped with my Ricoh GRD point-n-shoot. There was a disappointing number of “bar bands” doing karaoke at the Jazz Fest. These guys were NOT one of them, performing original material to a large crowd of young and old folks dancing like fools to their funky, soulful tunes.
